Celebrate World Wetlands Day on Feb. 2nd! Wetlands are one of nature’s most fascinating ecosystems. They are distinctive habitats full of hidden treasures ready to be discovered. Wetlands are important enough to have their holiday.
A wetland is a transitional area between land and water that is biologically diverse with species adapted to flooded conditions. Based on conservation studies by the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri’s wetlands support 237 species of birds, 46 amphibians, 33 reptiles, 38 fish, and 34 mammals. Some of these species are threatened or endangered.
Not only do wetlands support wildlife, but they also enhance water quality, control erosion, maintain stream flows, and some can even store more carbon than forests. In addition, they act as buffer zones helping to cope with storms and flooding. These fascinating and important habitats are located throughout Missouri and the world. They are often family-friendly areas containing boardwalks and trails making them easy to explore up close.
Unfortunately, wetlands everywhere are disappearing because of human alterations, both intentional and accidental. Just like a ripple in the water, each of us can make a difference in protecting our highly valued wetlands. One way to help is by making water-friendly, ecosystem-conscious decisions such as eliminating or targeting the use of harmful household and yard chemicals.
Take time to visit a local wetland this year. Seasonal changes bring interesting transformations and a variety of migratory visitors.
